Annual report 2017

Jan Tinbergen Awards

  1. 2017 Competition

1st Prize: Marcelo Bourguignon Pereira (Brazil) for his paper Modelling time series of counts with deflation or inflation of zeros.

2nd Prize: Christian Eduardo Galarza Morales (Brazil) for his paper Robust logistic quantile regression models using skewed heavy-tailed distributions.

The winners presented their papers during the World Statistics Congress at the 61st ISI WSC, Marrakech, Morocco 2017. The Awards were presented to the winners at the ISI/Associations’ Awards Ceremony.
  2. In close cooperation with the Board of ISI the Board of the Foundation redefined the target group of young statisticians eligible for the Jan Tinbergen Awards. The target  group was restricted to young statisticians from developing countries. The Board of the Foundations believes that  an extension of the target group to all young statisticians will better serve the aims of the Foundation. Two categories have been instituted: Papers in the first division  are to address an applied statistical problem of real interest in countries with a limited statistical infrastructure (developing countries) and papers in the second division  may be on any topic that directly addresses the development and improvement of statistical systems in countries with limited statistical infrastructure (developing countries).

Financial situation

The Board noticed that capital of the Foundation, due to the persistent low interest rates, has decreased over the last years and with the low interest rates it may be expected that it will continue to do so. To guarantee the future of the Jan Tinbergen Awards it will be necessary to stimulate additional funding. The statutes of the Foundation have been adapted in such a way that sponsoring becomes fiscally interesting for potential sponsors. The development and implementation of a sponsoring programme is planned for 2018. The Foundation will start a campaign to increase the capital of the foundation by approaching potential sponsors in 2018.

Board meetings

The Board of the Foundation met twice in 2017.
